Acclaimed for a voice with an expansive vocal expression, Fiona Jopson is a “gleaming soprano ripe with elegance, dynamism and flexibility”.
Australian soprano Fiona Jopson has been a member of the Wiener Staatsoper ensemble since 2018, where she has sung the roles of Erste Dame (Mozart: Die Zauberflöte), Helmwige (Wagner: Die Walküre), Dritte Norn (Wagner: Götterdämmerung) and Dama Di Lady Macbeth (Verdi: Macbeth).
In the 19/20 season she once again performed Dama Di Lady Macbeth alongside Plácido Domingo and took on the role of Griselda in Alma Deutscher’s well known opera Cinderella.
In Australia, Fiona has performed major roles such as Ariadne (Strauss: Ariadne auf Naxos) conducted by Christopher Dragon, Leonora (Verdi: Il Trovatore) and Mimi (Puccini: La Boheme).
Her wide repertoire includes Elisabetta di Valois (Verdi: Don Carlo), Desdemona (Verdi: Otello), Cio Cio San (Puccini: Madama Butterfly), Liù (Puccini: Turandot), Elsa (Wagner: Lohengrin), Tatiana (Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin), Donna Anna (Mozart: Don Giovanni), Contessa (Mozart: Le Nozze di Figaro).
Fiona has had extensive performance experience on the concert platform and in recital. Performances have included Soprano Solos in Bach’s Magnificat in D and Mass in F Major and recitals of operatic arias and Lieder, including Mahler’s Rückert Lieder.
Fiona has been the winner of numerous competitions. In 2015, she won the 91st Herald Sun Aria Competition, widely renowned as the oldest competition in Australia and the Vienna State Opera Award through the Opera Foundation for young Australians.
